Extras

Here are some more activities, printables, and ideas you can add to this unit for even more learning opportunities.

Reformation

  • Watch the film “Driven to Defiance” from PBS.  Have your teens take notes on a sheet of paper with these headings down the page: “Affect of the Catholic Church on daily life in medieval Europe” , “Events that drove Luther toward leaving the Catholic church”, and “People who had an effect on Luther’s beliefs”.  Discuss the film after viewing.
  • One consequence of Martin Luther’s ideas was the Peasant Revolts in Germany.  Read the Twelve Articles of the Peasants.  Make a 12 page booklet, with a page for each article.  Illustrate each page and write a phrase or sentence explaining each article. Discuss how these ideas were related to Luther’s ideas and how these ideas caused unrest in Europe.  Are there ideas today that are causing unrest?  How do you evaluate the usefulness/truth of new ideas?
  • A site with scads of ideas for high schoolers learning about the Reformation.
  • Reformation coloring pages.  Save the images and print them out smaller to paste to a notebooking page or fact sheet about the Reformation.

Angola & Zambia

  • Make some crafts to represent the animals that live in Angola and Zambia.  Here is a gazelle (springbok). An African elephantWater buffalo craft.  And an ostrich craft.  Put a large sheet of green or brown butcher paper up on the wall and create a mural with your animals as part of it.  Paint the rest of the scene.
