Homemade Sugar Scrub

Homemade sugar scrubs are awesome for both exfoliation and moisturizing.  They make me feel all nice and new again, with smooth, fresh skin.  Exfoliation removes the dead skin cells on the top layer.  Dead skin cells protect your body from UV rays, and keep moisture in, but too much dead skin blocks pores, increases the appearance of wrinkles, and makes your skin look dull.  Once a week whole body exfoliation feels great.  Sugar scrubs are ideal because they are easily made at home and moisturize at the same time they scrub, since they contain oil as a binder for the sugar.

Flying in the face of conventional wisdom, I clean my face with this harsh scrub, because it really does get rid of wrinkles small and big, makes your skin smooth and clear, gets rid of blackheads, and helps control acne outbreaks.  It may not be for everyone though so take it easy if you decide to try it on your face.  Here’s the recipe for my homemade sugar scrub if you’d like to give it a try.

Homemade Sugar Scrub

2 c. sugar (white or brown)

1/4 c. liquid hand soap

1/4 c. oil (baby, olive, jojoba, or almond)

1/4 t. essential oils (add this for scent if you like, optional)

  1. Just mix it all up in a bowl and store in a plastic container with a tight lid. You can keep it right in your shower if you like.
  2. Try mixing and matching different oils, soaps and scents to see what you like best. You can also add lemon zest, honey, coffee grounds, vitamin E, or yogurt to the mix.
  3. To use the scrub, rub it into dry skin while in the shower then rinse it off while you shampoo your hair. Or spread it on wet skin. See what feels best to you.
