We made these personalized glass ball glitter ornaments for our Christmas tree. We’ve made the paint version before, but the kids loved these ten times more. There’s just something about glitter.
Here’s what you need:
- Clear glass ornaments
- glitter (These are from Wal-Mart. They are a little pricier than the cheapo glitters that Wal-Mart sells, but they are worth the money. The perfectly sized grains make beautiful ornaments.)
- Mop and Glo (Yes, the cleaner for your floors)
- A small squirt bottle
- Paper cups
- Paper (scratch paper is fine)
- A covered work surface
How To Make Glitter Ornaments
First, you need to put the Mop and Glo solution into the little squirt bottle and squirt just a bit into your ornament (remove the top of the ornament and set it aside). Swish it around a bit, coating all the sides of the ornament while holding your finger over the top, then dump the excess Mop and Glo solution back out into a paper cup.
Next, fold a piece of paper or a paper plate into a simple funnel shape and pour glitter into the ornament. The glitter will stick to the Mop and Glo residue and coat the ornament on the inside.
You can pour the excess glitter from the ornaments back into the glitter containers.
Then you set it aside and let it dry for just a bit.
We cut out vinyl letters and symbols to add to the outside to personalize each of the ornaments.
Applying the vinyl is pretty easy. A lot of the small shapes can just be put on like a sticker. If it’s too intricate for that, you can follow the normal vinyl instructions. Rub across the top of the transfer tape and remove the paper backing. Next, place it where you want it to be on the ornament, then rub across the transfer tape firmly again to adhere it to the ornament. Peel off the transfer tape.
I love the way they turned out. We made these at our extended family Christmas party and everyone got to take home their own personalized ornaments.
The activity was a hit for young and old. It was really fun, and the ornaments turned out really, really cute.
We have a vinyl cutter, so we could create the names and add little designs specific to the person on each one that evening. If you don’t have a vinyl cutter you can order the vinyl online pretty inexpensively. There are lots of options and cute designs. I love seeing our tree every year with ornaments full of fun family memories.
